How to Gather Book Information

To give you the best possible feedback on your book idea, it’s important for us to look at what real readers enjoy (and don’t enjoy) in books like yours. Here’s a simple way to identify those books so we can analyze them together:

Step 1: Choose a Well-Known Book in Your Category

Think of a popular book that’s similar to yours in theme, style, or audience.

  • Examples:

    • Fiction: A bestselling romance, thriller, or fantasy novel like yours

    • Memoir: A life story with similar themes or experiences

    • Nonfiction: A book in the same space (such as self-help, business, health etc.)

Step 2: Search for the Book on Amazon or on Goodreads

  • Go to Amazon.com and navigate to the books category, or

  • Go to Goodreads.com

  • In the search area of either, type in the title and open its product page.

Step 3: Explore Related Books

On that page, look at Amazon’s recommendations:

  • “Customers who bought this also bought”

  • “Products related to this item”

  • “You might also like”

These sections show books that readers of your chosen book also enjoyed.

This gives us a list of other titles to study so we can understand reader expectations in your category.

Step 4: Copy the ISBN Number

Scroll to the Product Details section of the book’s page.

  • Find and copy the ISBN number (a 13-digit code).

  • Save this for each book you identify—ISBNs make sure we’re looking at the exact edition readers are reviewing.

Tip: Gather at least 3 bestselling books. The more titles we analyze, the clearer the picture of what readers value in books like yours.
